How Summer Holidays Can Disrupt Routine (And How to Keep Your Child Motivated!)

Summer holidays are a time for sunshine, fun, and well-earned breaks – but for many children, they can also throw routines out the window. At KBT Academy, we often see that when regular structure is replaced with late nights, screen time, and freedom from school or classes, kids can struggle to get back into the swing of things once the holiday fun winds down.

It’s completely normal – especially for younger children – to lose motivation or feel anxious about returning to their usual activities. Some may even worry they’ve fallen behind, especially in something like martial arts, where progress can feel visible and goal-based.

So what can parents do to help keep their child on track without taking away from the joy of summer?

1. Keep a Light Routine Going

While holidays should be relaxing, kids still benefit from some structure. Try to maintain a basic routine – regular mealtimes, consistent sleep, and some form of daily activity. Even simple habits like getting dressed by a certain time can help set expectations that “we still have things to do.”

2. Set Mini Goals (That Feel Fun!)

Instead of telling your child they “must” practice, try giving them a mini-challenge. Can they show you their best kick each morning? Can they remember and demonstrate one of their martial arts moves? You can even reward them with a sticker chart or fun outing – turning routine into a game keeps it light and motivating.

3. Stay Connected with KBT

Even if you’re heading off on holiday or taking time away, staying in touch with your martial arts family makes a big difference. KBT Academy runs classes all through the summer – and keeping up just once a week can help your child feel connected and confident.

Can’t make it to class? Reach out! We’re always happy to share a little “homework” – a move to practise, a challenge, or even a video demonstration to keep that martial arts spark alive.

4. Remind Them of Their Progress

Children can sometimes feel like they’ve forgotten everything over the holidays – but they haven’t! Remind them of how far they’ve come, show photos or videos from past belt gradings, and help them feel proud. Confidence is often just remembering what they’re capable of.

5. Enter the KBT Summer Competitions

This August, we’ve got three exciting competitions running – the perfect way to keep kids engaged and inspired! Whether your child is new or experienced, competitions are a fantastic chance to set a goal, test their skills, and have fun in a positive and supportive environment. It’s not about winning – it’s about having a go and building confidence. Get in touch with us to find out how to enter!

6. Talk About What’s Coming Next

Help your child see what they’re working towards. Is there a new belt coming up? A fun event or competition? A class they’ve been looking forward to? When children have something to look forward to, it helps anchor their motivation.
