Why Martial Arts Competitions Are Worth It – Even When It’s Tough

At KBT Academy of Martial Arts, we are proud to support our students as they grow in skill, confidence, and character—and one of the most exciting ways we see this happen is through Martial Arts competitions.
We know that for some families, the idea of entering a competition can feel a little daunting. From the organiser's point of view, we put a huge amount of care and effort into making sure every event runs smoothly, is safe, and feels like a celebration of effort and learning. But we’re also very aware that competitions come with emotions—especially for children who are still learning how to handle both success and disappointment.
Understanding the Concerns
As instructors and parents ourselves, we understand the concern some may have: What if my child gets upset if they don’t win? Will it knock their confidence? Could it make them want to give up?
These are totally valid worries—and they come from a place of love and protection. But we want to reassure you that while a child might feel a little disappointed in the moment (which is a natural part of learning), the experience of entering a competition brings far more positives than negatives.
The Bigger Picture: Growth, Grit, and Guts
Competitions are about so much more than medals and trophies. They give students the opportunity to:
Step out of their comfort zone – which is where real growth happens.
Practise under pressure – a skill that builds resilience for life.
Set goals and work towards them – improving focus and discipline.
Celebrate effort, not just outcome – and learn that hard work always has value.
Support others and be supported – creating lasting friendships and team spirit.
Even students who don’t walk away with a medal often come away with something even more powerful: pride in themselves for giving it a go, and motivation to keep improving.
Our Approach to Competition Days
As organisers, we make sure our competitions are friendly, fair, and above all encouraging. We want every student to feel that they belong there. Our referees and team leaders are trained to support the children, offering feedback with a smile, and reminding them that bravery and good sportsmanship are always more important than the result.
We also talk to our students in the lead-up to the event about what to expect and how to handle nerves. If they’re disappointed, we’re right there beside them, helping them see the bigger picture—and using it as a stepping stone for their future success.
It’s OK to Be Nervous – But It’s Also OK to Be Proud
It’s perfectly normal for children (and even parents!) to feel nervous about competitions. But nerves mean we care—and overcoming those nerves is an achievement in itself. Every time a student steps onto the mat, they’re showing courage, discipline, and determination. And those qualities will carry them far beyond Martial Arts.
A Final Word to Parents
If you're unsure about entering your child in a competition, we totally understand. But we’d encourage you to see it not as a test of who’s “the best,” but as a chance for your child to learn, grow, and shine in ways they might not expect.
Win or lose, we believe that every student who takes part in a competition is a champion—because they’ve chosen to face a challenge and give it their all.
We’re here to guide and support every step of the way, and we couldn’t be prouder of our students who rise to the occasion, whatever the outcome.
